About the faculty

The Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Somalia was established in 2015 as part of the Faculty of Agriculture. In 2017, the Faculty of Veterinary became a separate faculty in response to the increasing number of students who have been interested in this faculty. The faculty aims to provide a high quality program in veterinary medicine and animal husbandry with emphasis on hands-on experience that will make a great contribution to a better livestock economy in the country. The importance of livestock production for the Somali economy cannot be overstated as it supports the largest production of the Somali population whose lives are highly dependent on animals. It also accounts for 60-65% of the gross domestic product (GDP), constituting the largest single source of hard currency. Despite the importance of this field, little attention has been given to this field, and veterinary science and animal husbandry in higher education is often considered as the last resort for many students. However, UNISO makes every effort to change this mindset and draw attention to the importance of this field to the graduates’ future career and to the economic development of the country as well.

Vision

The Faculty strives to produce competent doctors in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry who can improve the quality and the quantity of livestock production which will have great impact on the lives of the pastoralists, agro-pastoralists and generally the wealth of the entire nation.

Our mission is to provide an environment conducive to the highest levels of education, learning, and research in animal sciences, by developing educational programs that ensure career success for our graduates as well as promoting the nation’s economic development.
